The business of great patient care is very much that: a business. At Mid-America Orthopedics, Dr. Pat Do has built his practice’s model on hiring the best business people to run daily operations so the doctors can focus solely on providing their best care for every individual and their unique situation.

“We believe that you can actually serve patients better when you run it like a business”, explains Dr. Do, because that creates an environment where “guys like me can do what we do best.”

This focused approach to patient care has built Mid-America Orthopedics into a thriving practice with four locations throughout Kansas and a patient volume of nearly 84,000 last year alone.

His passion for patient care can be traced back to a single moment in his childhood, when his father asked him to help an elderly woman up a flight of stairs. “She was so grateful and that made me feel so good. It changed me. It became the lens through which I view how my family, colleagues, staff and patients should be treated. That perspective has changed the face of the care we give.”

And though this has always been their business model, success has not always come easy for Mid-America Orthopedics. Just when business had begun to grow, a nationwide recession hit and they suddenly found themselves with mounting debt; having to turn to credit cards to stay afloat. “We had to go through our growth phase and go through the struggles like any business would.”

During the difficult phases, it comes down to hard work, commitment, and never compromising the quality of care that has become the Mid-America trademark. It pays off in repeat business, client referrals and, more often than not, a lot of hugs. “When I get those hugs in clinic or after surgery, it reminds me of why I do this”, says Dr. Do, “If I don’t get hugs, I can’t do this job.“
